The Initial Consultation

Whichever lens you are interested in, we would carry out a consultation which will take at least 30-45 minutes where we will assess the health and condition of everything from the tips of the lashes to the iris,  looking at the quality and quantity of the tear film (the main support for the contact lens), the shape and condition of the lids and the size and health of the cornea. To do this we use a biomicroscope (slit lamp) with various coloured dyes to help show us the general well being of the front of the eye. We would then measure the shape of the eye using a Corneal Topographer, which is so accurate we can design lenses from this data. All this information is then used along with our talk with you about what you want and expect from lenses, what sort of work you do, the environment at work, your hobbies and general health etc, to help us decide what lenses to recommend for you and to give you trial lenses which, in most cases, will be free of charge.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

Often thought to be out of date or old fashioned these days Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (RGP's) are, surprisingly, sometimes the only if not the very best solution for certain prescriptions and conditions.

For many years RGP lenses have in truth been a healthier option than soft lenses being far more oxygen permeable than older soft materials but because of the greater initial comfort of soft lenses have not always been the popular choice.

I find that in cases of irregular corneas (high astigmatism, keratoconus, post surgery complications etc) gas permeables often provide the best results, although we are now using hybrid (RGP centre and soft skirt) and semi scleral (large diameter) gas permeables to great effect with, sometimes, greater comfort.

However, the skill and art in fitting this type of lens is slowly dying out as I've found out during the several workshops I've presented on this topic, therefore, fewer opticians are happy and/or competent to fit patients with RGP lenses even if they are the best option.

At KTO we focus on providing the patient with the best contact lenses for them and will happily design and fit RGP's, hybrids, semi-sclerals whether for a complex prescription or for multifocal prescriptions.
